Thank you to Knight's Writing Company (in Canada!) for sending this pen for review! We'll do a Serious Nibbage on it, then give it away there, so stay tuned! Knight's Writing has a nice, tidy website that's easy to navigate and doesn't require an excessive amount of clicking to find what you're looking for. In the box with the Kaweco pen, there were peanuts and two sheets of paper. One of the pages explains that the company is new and would love to hear from you, which is always nice, along with adorable drawings and a little note. The second sheet explains how they company is striving to be environmentally friendly. This sheet describes how you can dispose of your packaging, explaining what is recyclable and how. Pretty cool, and I really appreciate that. I think it would be ideal if this was an online link, or printed double-sided. Even so, I think this is a green initiative, and I appreciate it.

PACKAGING
The Kaweco Student is packaged in a large Kaweco tin with a cardboard sleeve. I love these tins - they are tastefully decorated, they are a good size to hold these pens and many other pens, and are very useful as far as packaging goes. It's not huge, unnecessary packaging, and it's reusable.
APPEARANCE
I generally like Kaweco pens - they're usually pretty good looking and are decent writers. Student is in general wider at the top of the body and tapers towards the end. The barrel widens at the middle, as does the cap. It's a really happy, cheery, sunshine yellow. I love this color and think it makes this pen look great! The center band is marked with Kaweco, Germany. The finial is the silver metal Kaweco logo. The clip is attached internally, so there is no external clip ring visible. The section is shiny chrome, flaring at the nib. The section design is nice but it looks a little cold against the warm, happy yellow. Overall though, I really like the appearance and design of this pen and I love the yellow.
NIB & PERFORMANCE
The medium steel nib is like Kaweco's other steel nibs. This one has a single slit and a round breather hole. The nib is engraved with the Kaweco logo, the nib size, and some simple flourishes. I find the nib size too small for the size of the pen; they look better on the Sport-sized models. The nice thing is that it's interchangeable.
Kaweco nibs are usually pretty decent. The medium is usually a safe choice - not too dry, not too fine - until you get the hang of what you like. This medium was very satisfactory. It was smooth, wet, and did not hard start or skip with normal writing. With pressure, some line variation was possible, but it's not really a soft or springy nib. It's not meant for pressure either, so it does dry out easily. I enjoyed using it though.
IN HAND
The clip is snug, but usable. There is a small flare at the end that makes it easy to slide the pen into pockets and pouches.
The section threads are a little sharp but the grip is indented to accommodate fingers. The threads are out of the way for me, so unless you grip your pen higher up, they shouldn't be an issue. The section can get slippery because it's quite smooth. I also find the section a little thin, but the pen isn't too heavy, so it works out okay.
The pen is light, really comfortable, and well-balanced when unposted. It's a very comfortable, usable weight when unposted, and I preferred using it this way. It can be posted, though not very deeply, and it becomes a little too long for my comfort, even though the balance was still decent.
It's a comfortable size in general - not as small as the pocket-sized Sport, and not huge.
PROS & CONS
OVERALL
The Kaweco Student is a nice, solid pen. Although I gripe about the appearance of the small nib, it does make it more economical because if you also have other Kawecos, you can just swap the nibs around. It's a solid, reliable writer, and the pen itself is a step up from the Sport series. I think it looks pretty good as far as its shape, and as I said: I love the yellow!
I received this pen free of charge for the purposes of this review. I was not compensated monetarily for my review. Everything you've read here is my own opinion. There are no affiliate links in this review. This pen will be given away on Serious Nibbage, so stay tuned.
