Ink Shot Review: Jacques Herbin 1798 Améthyste de l'Oural

Thanks Exaclair for sending this ink over for review! I posted a teaser a little while back and wanted to spend some more time with the ink before posting the official review, so here goes!

PROS

• Larger box and bottle with wider mouth - easier to fill from. (Compared to 1670 Anniversary inks)
• Appears to have some water resistance - perhaps because it's so saturated.
• Gorgeous rich, shading purple ink.
• Completely legible, even in fine, dry nibs.
• Silver particles to top it off!
• Classy presentation.

CONS

• Particles always require extra care when cleaning.
• Wider mouth could still be wider!
• Flat base of bottle is hard to fill from when it's running low.
• Ink feathers and bleeds on certain papers, rather randomly. Do a test before full page writing.
• I couldn't make it sheen.
• Purple inks can stain clear pens, so be careful.

OVERALL

This new launch of the 1798 ink line is interesting. I'm not really certain why the change has been made, but I like many of the changes - the boxes are still very nice (though not as cute), the bottles have wider mouths that are easier to fill from, and the purple is obviously very beautiful. I have always found these inks (1670) to be a little finicky and they really need fountain pen friendly paper to perform their best, and it's the same with the Améthyste de l'Oural. With the shimmer ink market rather flooded (Diamine, De Atramentis, J. Herbin), I wonder if many will flock for this purple, but at least the option is there. It's a gorgeous base color, and the silver shimmer is hot stuff!
